The Devil’s Bathtub trail is a thrilling hiking experience situated in the breathtaking Spearfish Canyon. This trail spans approximately 3 miles round trip. The trailhead is located at the north end of the parking area, here you’ll find a narrow path that unfolds between Spearfish Creek and the road. This narrow passage is so narrow that bushes and leaves may gently brush against you.

We didn’t like walking through the narrow path. So on our way back we opted to walk along Spearfish Canyon Hwy instead. If you choose to walk on the side of the road be cautious of passing cars, especially during peak times).

This narrow path guides you to Cleopatra Place, where a wooden bridge spans Spearfish Creek, offering a beautiful view of the creek. As you re-enter the woods, you’ll see signs for the trail and private property. Please be respectful, stay off the private property, and diligently follow the trail to the right marked with clear signs.

While navigating this part of the trail, exercise caution, as it is adorned with large roots and rocks that may pose tripping hazards. Along your trek, expect to cross Squaw Creek at least 10 times. The creek crossings aren’t marked and there is no specific place to cross. You’ll know when to cross the stream because you will run out of trail. Follow the trail until you see tall rock walls.

Best Time To Visit Devil’s Bathtub South Dakota

The best time of year to visit Devil’s Bathtub in South Dakota is during the late spring to early fall months, typically from April to October. This period offers great weather conditions for hiking and exploring the trail. Here’s a breakdown of the seasons:

Spring (April to May):

  • Spring brings moderate temperatures, blooming wildflowers, and lush greenery. The weather is generally pleasant, making it an ideal time for hiking without the intense summer heat.
  • Keep in mind that May tends to bring a lot of precipitation which means higher water levels.

Summer (June to August):

  • Summer offers warmer temperatures, perfect for cooling off in the water and sliding down the small waterfall (waterslide). The trail is at its busiest during the summer months, so consider visiting on weekdays to avoid larger crowds.
  • June averages the most precipitation, which may make crossing the creek a little more difficult.

We went in July and got hit with a heat wave. Temps were over 100 degrees. While the hike was hot, the water was refreshing.

Early Fall (September to October):

  • Early fall provides cooler temperatures and the changing fall colors of autumn foliage. The trail is still accessible and can be chilly, dressing in layers is wise.

Winter:

  • During the winter months, the trail may be covered in snow and ice, making it challenging and potentially dangerous. I highly recommend bringing crampons.

Additionally, weather conditions can vary, so always check the local forecast before planning your visit.

Devil’s Bathtub Hiking Tips

Check Trail Conditions:
Before starting your hike, check current trail conditions and weather forecasts. This ensures you are well-prepared for any challenges you might encounter.

Wear Appropriate Footwear:
Choose sturdy and comfortable hiking shoes, especially for sections that involve rock scrambling. Ensure they provide good traction, as parts of the trail may be uneven. I recommend wearing good water shoes because of all the stream crossings. We prefer Adidas or Columbia water shoes. They are comfortable and durable.

What to Wear:
South Dakota weather can change, so dress in layers to accommodate temperature variations. Consider bringing a light rain jacket in case of unexpected showers. If you plan on swimming wear a swimsuit and pack a small towel. We didn’t wear swimsuits or pack a towel, instead, we wore quick dry clothes, and by the time we got back to the car we were dry.

Bring Ample Water and Snacks:
Hydration is key. Bring plenty of water, especially during warmer months. Pack snacks to keep energy levels up, especially if you’re hiking with children.

Start Early:
Begin your hike early in the day to avoid peak temperatures and potential crowds. Starting early also allows for a more relaxed pace.

Be Mindful of Wildlife:
Keep an eye out for wildlife along the trail, and maintain a safe distance. Teach children about respecting the natural environment and observing animals from afar.

Respect Private Property:
Be aware of signs marking private property. Stay on designated trails, and respect the boundaries to ensure a positive hiking experience.

Stream Crossings:
When crossing Spearfish Creek, choose safe and stable points. Be mindful of wet rocks that can be slippery. Families with children should exercise caution, and consider helping little ones navigate the stream crossings.

Take Breaks:
Pace yourself, and take breaks when needed, especially if you’re hiking with family members of varying fitness levels. Enjoy the scenery and make it an enjoyable experience.

Be Prepared for Rock Scrambling:
Parts of the trail involve rock scrambling. If hiking with children or elderly family members, assess their comfort and proceed accordingly.

Poison Ivy
Keep your eyes peeled for poison ivy. We didn’t see any but I have read reviews where other people have.

Bathrooms
There are no bathrooms anywhere on this trail or in the parking lot. Make sure that everyone in your party uses the bathroom beforehand.

Dogs
Dogs are allowed but must be on a leash. We brought out dog and he did very well. He loved crossing the streams but he did need some help in the rock scramble areas (mostly because he’s afraid of everything).

What To Bring On Your Hike To Devil’s Bathtub

To ensure a comfortable and safe experience on the Devil’s Bathtub trail in South Dakota, it’s important to be well-prepared. Here’s a checklist of items to bring and wear for the hike:

Sturdy Hiking Shoes or Water Shoes
Wear comfortable and supportive hiking shoes with good traction. The trail involves uneven terrain and, at times, rock scrambling. There are good water shoes that have great traction and they would work great if hiking in warmer months. However, water shoes don’t protect your ankles like hiking boots would.

Weather Appropriate Clothing
Know the weather and dress accordingly. If you plan on swimming, pack towels and wear swimsuits or quick-drying clothes.

Moisture Wicking Clothing
Opt for moisture-wicking clothing. It’ll keep you dry especially in the summer months.

Hat, Sunglasses, Sunblock
Though most of the trail is in the woods, it does eventually open up and loses the shade. Protect yourself from the sun by bringing hats, sunglasses and sunblock.

Backpack
Bring a backpack to carry all the essentials with you. We always use a hydration backpack and then fill it with everything else we need. It is more comfortable than hauling around water bottles.

Water
Bring plenty of water with you, especially during the summer months.

Snacks
Pack energy-boosting snacks to keep you fueled during your adventure.

Insect Repellant
A portion of the hike is through the woods. Keep the pesky mosquitos and ticks away with insect repellant.

First Aid Kit
Carry a basic first aid kit with bandages, pain relievers, and any necessary medications.

Cell Phone
Bring a fully charged cell phone with emergency contacts saved. Ensure you have signal coverage in the area.

Camera or Smart Phone
Capture the scenic beauty with a camera or smartphone. Ensure you have enough storage space.

Hiking Poles
Consider using hiking poles for stability, especially during creek crossings or rocky sections.

Change of Shoes
Consider bringing a change of shoes for after the hike, especially if your hiking shoes get wet during stream crossings.

Thoughtfully packing will ensure that you’ll be well prepared for hiking Devil’s Bathtub.
